What is the truth?

Knowing truth from deception is a core part of being human. It keeps us safe, it proves justice, it comforts us. As human beings, we are drawn to know the truth and make the truth known as an attempt to live in the real world as opposed to an imaginary one.

God is Truth. He is the One that defines it. And due to us being made in His image, we are made in truth. We are drawn to the truth. Knowing the truth is a key purpose of being human.

Therefore, knowing the truth is so important for our journey as not just Christians, but as humans. The definition of truth is "in accordance with fact or reality, real or actual."

This definition speaks to the way humans pick out what is true to what isn't. Humans decide what is true by what they see. Their own experiences define the truth.

With everyone deciding for themselves what is true, how do we know what is perfectly true?

John 8:31-32 says, "If you continue in my word, you are really my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (CSB).

What Jesus is telling His disciples in this scripture is that to find out the truth, we need to be in His word. This means everything in His word is perfectly true, and when we know the truth, it will set us free!

This may be easy as a concept, but it's difficult in practice as it goes against our human nature. We have the enemy in our ear, telling us bad things about ourselves. We have the news telling us hopeless things about our world. We have others influencing how we view ourselves and others. And this all confuses what we believe is true. This can lead to us believing negative things about ourselves and others, falling for the enemies traps and lead us down a path of destruction.

I've had many experiences in my life that has caused me to believe negative things about myself. From family trauma, to being bullied as a child, my MRKH diagnosis, battles with mental illness and much more. This has confused me and led me to walk down a path of destruction.

I began to realise in my most recent depressive episode that my perception of what is true isn't lining up with what God defines as true. I needed a complete truth reset, to begin to learn what is true right from scratch.

If you feel you are going down a path of destruction, are being chained up by something, or are confused with what is truth or not - go back to His word. Let the foundation of the truth in your life be the words from the mouth of out God of Truth.

I talk more about the importance of truth on my latest podcast episode.
