Reframe your identity.

I have just started working my first "big girl" job - one that was the goal of my 3 years of study and that requires a lot from me. One thing I immediately have learnt from this experience is that I have a tendency to tie my self worth to the outcome of my work.

Meaning that if my boss gives me criticism, I'm taking that straight to heart.

And this isn't healthy, or true.

As humans, we derive our self worth from our identity. We see our worth in what we choose to identify ourselves as in particular situations - whether that's a friend, partner, worker etc. And depending on our confidence and experience in certain areas, we can express these identities with adjectives in front, whether that's positive or negative.

For me, it was an inexperienced, new marketer.

This transferred into what worth I held of myself, which all depended on the outcomes or result of my marketing work. I'm sure we have all done this at one time or another, when we've seen our personal worth as the outcome of our work or relationships.

But this is not our true identity. Our true identity is found in our Creator.

And He says we are loved, chosen, forgiven, righteous children of His.

If I am going to switch my relationship with my work from a negative to a positive one, I need to change the source of my identity, and therefore my self worth. I have personally found that no matter what situation I'm in, there is always an aspect of God's identity of me taught in His word that contradicts my negative identity towards myself.

In this example, what combatted my outcome focused, earthly identity was the fact that I am empowered by Him.

He gives strength to the weary

and increases the power of the weak.

- Isaiah 40:2

Because of our identity in God, we can see that we are worthy, even if our self made identity says we aren't.

When we look through the lens of the Creator, we see how much the creation (aka us) is truly worth.

If you can relate to me and my story of self worth, I encourage you to reframe who you see yourself as. I pray that you will be able to see yourself more of who He is, and less of who the world says you are.

Listen to my latest episode of my podcast, Living Hopeful, to hear me talk about this and more hopeful lessons I've learnt from God over the last few weeks.
