As humans, we tend to base what we believe to be true on what we can justify it with. What we actually experience, see, hear or feel. Our feelings have massive influence over what we believe, but aren't that reliable.
Psalm 139:7-9 says that there is nowhere that we can go that God can't reach us. When I was had just recommitted my life to God at age 13, every time after this that I would enter into worship or prayer, I would feel goosebumps on my skin. This feeling of goosebumps was what I learnt to use to tell me whether I was close to God or not, whether I was worshipping "right" or whether I was in the presence of God.
As I matured in my faith, I got these feelings less and less. I would be doing all the same things, but not getting goosebumps as often. Because I had relied on that feelings to tell me whether I was close to God or not, I thought I wasn't as close to Him as I was before. I bet myself up, thinking I was worshipping correctly or saying the right things when I prayed. I believed that the truth was that I wasn't near God, all because I wasn't feeling a human sensation that I did before.
The truth I believed when I didn't get goosebumps contradicted what God's word said.
Deuteronomy 31:8 says God will never leave or forsake us. Hebrews 13:5 says the same thing. There are multiple places in God's word that promises to us that whatever we do or wherever we are, He will never leave us. He is always close to us.
What is the more reliable source of truth? My feelings, which are vulnerable to being influenced and are changing consistently, or God's Word, which was authored by the definition of truth and always stays the same?
Despite what you are feeling, God's Word will always be the truth.
Believing something that contradicts your inner most being is challenging. It takes intentionality, accountability and a whole lot of conviction. It's a never ending journey, at least I haven't finished the journey.
I encourage you to look deep into God's word, ask Him what you are believing that contradicts the truth, and live a life that seeks the truth.
