Applying truth to our own lives

I came across this psychological theory called the "Illusory Truth Effect." What this effect proves is that the more something is exposed to us, the more we are to believe it is true. Even if something that has proved false is repeated to us as being true multiple times, we can believe it is true.

What this tells me is that there is power in repetition and exposure.

This means that repetition and exposure are key tools in our journey of believing the truth. With hard work and focus, it is possible for us to believe something we don't currently believe.

Here are two ways I have put these into practice:

1. Scripture memorization

Now, I know this may seem very kids churchy of me and a bit childish - but it is such as valuable tool to believe the truth. When we commit something to memory, it becomes apart of us. Our inner dialogue says it when a situation or thought contradicts it.

We are more likely to believe something when we have committed it to memory, as we are already so familiar with it.

2. Others saying truth over you

Having people around us is so crucial to believing the truth. We can't become more like Jesus without community.

Getting people to say truth over you doesn't always mean telling them outright, "I believe this lie, can you point out when I say it and remind me of the truth?" Most of the time, you words and actions can clearly point out to people the lies you are believing, and from there others can repeat the truth over you.

I hope that you enjoyed this mini series on truth. I pray that you come to know more and more truth each and every day, and that you are able to live in the freedom of this.
